Wear Your Name Always!
By Tina Marino
There are a few things in life that I think are weird. Usually it is because I have preconceived ideas about these things; or limiting beliefs about them; or because I knew some who do a specific thing and I thought they were a bit off - oooops! I mean eccentric!
One of these things I thought of as weird is wearing a name tag while not in attendance at a seminar or conference, unless you are a police officer or a door-to-door salesman. Every time I saw someone wearing a name tag - realtors for example - at the post office or in line at a store, I would think "How uncouth! How egotistical can one get?"
Many years ago, my husband and I did a stint as Herbalife distributors. Our up-line told us to wear our nametags at all times. Yikes! No way. I could not do it. I felt stupid wearing it - and I felt others were thinking of me as "uncouth and egotistical", just as I thought of those who wore nametags.
But then I met Gerry Rose, one of my mentors! I swear, this guy even showered and slept wearing his nametag! While under his tutelage, I chose to do what he suggested and had a nice brushed-gold magnetic nametag made with my accounting firm's logo, my name, tagline and title on it. I started out slowly. I would put it on in the car right before I got out to speak at an event. The minute I got back in my car, or even as I was walking to it, I would take it off! God forbid someone would see me with it on and think me uncouth!
Every once in awhile I would forget I was wearing it. I'd be in the grocery checkout line and someone would say "Oh! You have an accounting firm! Do you do taxes?" I would be surprised, but I got a new client! It was a perfect opportunity to let people know who I was, and it didn't cost me a thing. I was a walking billboard for my business!
Since I was serious about growing my business, and since I am not stupid, I purposed to wear my nametag regularly - especially when dressed right and looking professional.
If your business' name clearly describes what you do, like "Quickie Computer Repair", you don't need anything more than the name of your business, your name and your title. However, if the name of your business does not adequately describe your work, use a short descriptive line under your business name that lets people know something about what you do.
My encouragement to you is this: Be proud of what you do! You have devoted your life to your business - let others know it!
