Power and Problems With Advertising - Anti-McCain Campaign Ads Do a Disservice to Seniors
By Lance Winslow
As the 2008 presidential election comes to a close we see quite a bit of negative political campaigning in the various candidates' ads. For some voters, they this is as just silly rhetoric; sound and fury signifying not much. But unfortunately some of the political ads do a huge disservice to large groups of people. Further, many of the attacks that come from Bloggers and mass emails really hurt good citizens and cause inappropriate stereotyping.
Take for instance the political ads that say the John McCain is too old or the Bloggers that say he has one foot in the grave, well, basically they are saying that anyone of John McCain's an age is not of sound mind and therefore should never be president. If everyone believes that every old person in the United States of America is incompetent then this does a huge disservice to seniors.
The fact of the matter is that John Mccain is not all that old, not considering the new actuary tables that have people living much longer. Many of the kids today will live to be well over 100 years old. Are we telling everyone that once they reach 70 they are of no value to society or no good for any leadership position? Are we saying that we are not interested in the wisdom of seniors? Are we saying we are willing to throw away anyone over the age of 70 and chock them off as senile?
The reason I ask this question is the anti-age-McCain ads during this political season seem to indicate that older folks are of no value. That simply is not true and it isn't true because when you have lived a good many years and watched the up's and downs and the business cycles long enough you are able to make better decisions and not relive past mistakes.
"Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it," says one famous quote. Senator John McCain does not have to study history very much anymore because he has lived it. Please consider this and if you are a senior. Maybe some seniors will vote for Senator John McCain just to prove that they are not done yet! Thus, we can consider this part of the power of advertising.
