Three Great Design Tips For Profitable Pop Displays and Window Graphics

By Christine Harrell

Designing pop displays and window graphics are often narrowed down to the colors, graphics, and text. While these are the three main components of successful signage, they are not the only things to consider when designing your signs. Everything from the exact words you use to get your message across to the size of the details and space you leave open will determine the effectiveness of the medium. Here are some tips to creating successful displays.

Text Tips

Deciding what to say on your pop displays or window graphics is extremely important. Having phrases or points that are too long make it difficult for the viewer to absorb your information. The wording of your phrase is also important. It needs to be written in such a way that there is no doubt what you want the consumer to know. It also needs to give them a need to act on your advertisements.

Use workings that are short and direct. You also want to use sayings that contain 'call to action' words while using a phrasing that stands out from the crowd. One good example is 'for all your shopping needs.' It is short and direct, but boring and doesn't initiate a feeling of action with the viewer. Instead try 'log on to [your website] and get x% discount'.

Borders

Many designers and companies make the mistake of extending their graphics and text right to the outsides of their window displays and pop displays. Others fail to use the available space wisely. Both mistakes severely hamper the effects of the advertising. One appears to busy while the other will appear boring. The secret is to use 'quiet' space to hold the consumer's focus on the advertising instead of forcing their eyes to wander to the edge of the graphics and beyond. To avoid this mistake, make the widths of the borders at least 10% of the total height.

Spacing

Like borders, the eyes need a calm area to make window graphics look pleasing and easy to read. The spacing also needs to draw your eye across the entire message so that the viewer absorbs the concept of the advertising. The lettering and graphics should use the available space well while still giving a comfortable border around the phrasing and between the letters. When designing your text and graphics, there should be more space on the outside of the graphics and text than between them to focus the viewer's attention and make it easier to read.

What you choose to put on your pop displays and window graphics is just as important as how it is applied to the advertisements. While empty space can cause to you miss the mark on communicating your message, it can help you hold the attention of the viewer and increase the sign's impact. Select graphics, phrasing, and layouts that will unify your message and convince the viewer to take action.
